This morning you may have noticed the giant headline in the News & Messenger’s PW Pulse newspaper. If you missed it here’s what the headline read: “Potomac Mills Cutting 725 Commuter Spaces”. When I saw this headline it screamed at me. I thought immediately, not again! They had already reduced the number of spaces in the past by 300. Now they are going to further reduce the parking spaces by 725?
As I quickly began to read through the article I found that they would only keep 275 spaces – as required by the county. This will take effect on February 14, 2011. I’m sure you’re wondering why this sudden change? Well, it turns out that Simon Property Group, which owns Potomac Mills, has decided to expand. They plan to build 20,000 square feet of retail space and 30,000 square feet of restaurant space on the south side of the mall (where the commuter parking lot is).
So I began to think, is this really a bad thing or a good thing in the long run for our community? After all, Potomac Mills is privately owned and they are in the business of retail. If this expansion goes through this would mean more jobs for this area and really could be a great help to the economy and the county as a whole, as Mr. Mike Sullivan – the general manager of Potomac Mills, stated.
So that means, now all of the other commuter lots are sure to swell up in response to this announcement. Prince William County already had issues with the commuter lots being overwhelmed and this surely will not make things better. Where should the county build a new commuter lot to replace the Potomac Mills commuter lot? Of course, you do not want the new location to be to far away from the highway entrance ramp. I could not think of any locations within a close proximity (that don’t already have retail or office buildings on them, of course. 🙂 )
